Faulty wiring is one of those things that rarely announces itself loudly. Now and then you get a dramatic fault, a bang and the power’s gone, but far more often it’s subtle. A few small things that don’t seem connected, that you put up with for months because individually they don’t seem worth calling anyone about. However, the trouble is that those small signs are usually the wiring trying to tell you something before it becomes a bigger problem.
We do a lot of fault-finding across Worcester, and homeowners who call early almost always get away with a smaller, cheaper fix than those who wait until something gives out completely. So here are the signs worth paying attention to.
1. Lights That Flicker Or Dim
The occasional flicker from one light is usually just a loose bulb or a tired fitting. What’s worth taking notice of is flickering across several lights, or lights that dim noticeably when something else kicks in, such as the kettle, the washing machine or an electric shower.
That kind of behaviour often points to loose connections somewhere in the circuit, or wiring that’s struggling to cope with the load. It can also indicate a problem further back toward the consumer unit. Either way, persistent flickering or dimming isn’t something to just live with; it’s a sign that something needs to be checked.
2. Sockets Or Switches That Feel Warm
A socket, plug or light switch should never feel warm to the touch. If it does, especially if there’s a faint smell of hot plastic, that usually means there’s a loose or deteriorating connection causing resistance, and resistance generates heat.
Heat in the wrong place is exactly how electrical fires start, so this is one to act on quickly. Stop using the socket or switch and get it looked at as soon as possible. It’s often a straightforward repair if it’s caught early, but left alone, it can cause real damage.
3. Scorch Marks Or Discolouration
Closely related, any browning, scorching, or black marks around a socket, plug, or switch are a clear warning sign. It means heat has been building up there, possibly for a while. The same goes for any discolouration on the consumer unit itself.
None of this is normal, and all of it needs to be investigated.
4. A Burning Or Fishy Smell
If you ever notice a burning smell, a strange, fishy smell, or a chemical smell with no obvious source, take it seriously. That smell is often overheating electrical components or insulation starting to break down. It’s one of the clearest signs of a fault, and one you really shouldn’t ignore.
If the smell is strong or you can’t find where it’s coming from, switching off the affected circuit at the consumer unit (if you can do so safely) and calling an emergency electrician are sensible moves.

5. Breakers Or RCDs That Keep Tripping
Your consumer unit is designed to cut the power when it detects a problem, so a trip every now and then is the system doing exactly what it’s supposed to. What’s not normal is repeated tripping, especially when you can’t pin it on a single appliance.
An RCD that keeps tripping, or a breaker you’re constantly resetting, is telling you there’s a fault on that circuit. It could be moisture getting into a connection, a damaged cable, an appliance fault or a deteriorating connection somewhere.
The worst thing you can do is keep flicking it back on and ignoring it, because the protection is tripping for a reason. This is one of the most common things we get called out to diagnose, and our electrical fault-finding service is built around properly tracing exactly this kind of problem, rather than guessing.
6. Buzzing Or Crackling Sounds
Electrics should be silent. If you can hear a faint buzzing or crackling from a socket, switch, or the consumer unit, that’s usually a sign of a loose connection or arcing, where electricity is jumping a gap it shouldn’t. Arcing generates heat and poses a genuine fire risk, so any buzzing or crackling needs to be checked out.
7. Sockets That Have Stopped Working
If a socket, or an entire run of sockets, suddenly stops working or works intermittently, that’s a fault that needs tracing. Sometimes it’s a tripped circuit, but if resetting it doesn’t help, or it keeps happening, there’s likely a connection problem somewhere in the circuit. Intermittent faults like this can be fiddly to track down, which is exactly why proper electrical testing beats trial and error.
8. A Slight Tingle From Appliances Or Switches
If you ever feel even a mild tingle or shock when touching an appliance, a metal light switch or a tap, stop and take it seriously. That can indicate an earthing fault, which is potentially dangerous. Don’t keep using whatever gave you the tingle and get it checked as a priority. Proper earthing is fundamental to keeping you safe, and a fault in it is not something to wait for.
9. Mounting Sockets On Skirting Boards Or Lots Of Extension Leads
This one’s less about a sudden fault and more a sign of an older or inadequate installation. Sockets mounted low on skirting boards are a hallmark of older wiring. And if every room relies on a tangle of extension leads and adaptors because there simply aren’t enough sockets, the installation is being pushed beyond its design limits, which raises the risk of overheating and faults over time.
Don’t Guess, Get It Tested
The tricky thing with electrical faults is that the same symptom can have several different causes. For example, a tripping RCD might be a faulty appliance, moisture in an outdoor circuit, or a damaged cable buried in a wall. The only reliable way to know is proper testing with the right equipment, not poking about and hoping.
That’s the approach we take. We use calibrated test equipment and a methodical process to isolate the fault step by step, find the actual root cause, and explain it to you in plain terms. In many cases, we can carry out the repair during the same visit. And if the testing shows the wider installation is showing its age, we’ll tell you honestly whether something like an EICR or, in some cases, rewiring work would be worth considering, rather than just patching the immediate symptom.
